Consumer packaging expectations have grown significantly over the years and studies have shown that products sell better with better packaging.
The numbers speak for themselves: consumers are attracted to superior food packaging containers. According to a 2018 Packaging Matters study from paper and product design firm WestRock (westrock.com), 42% of consumers said they use a product more frequently because of its packaging. As reported by Inc. magazine, “Every year, 95% of new products fail. The reason is simple: Most customers don’t have the time or energy to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of the products in their shopping carts, so they use a shortcut to make their decision. That shortcut is your product’s packaging.”
WestRock surveyed more than 5,000 consumers and packaging professionals for their Packaging Matters study. They found satisfaction with consumer packaging is improving—in fact, consumer packaging satisfaction has increased by 46% over the last six years. The study identifies three key components of food packaging containers that matter to consumers and impact their shopping preferences: functionality, trust and aesthetics.
A key part of functionality is keeping products safe. According to the WestRock study, 84% of consumers labelled packaging safety as important. In fact, 75% of consumers say that a key component of their purchasing decision is whether the packaging is made from materials that prevent the product from leaking or breaking.
Functionality is about more than safety, however. It is also about convenience. More than three-quarters of those surveyed said they wanted food packaging containers that were easy to open, and that were also easy to reseal. A vast majority also wanted packaging that was easy to store at home, and easy to find on the shelf.
Keeping products safely inside food packaging containers is important, but so is keeping contaminants out. According to the Packaging Matters study, nearly 80% of consumers are more likely to trust products if the packaging protects against tampering or contamination. That’s probably why, of all the product categories, consumers trusted packaging for medicine and non-alcoholic beverages the most, and online food service delivery packaging the least. After all, secure medical packaging is commonplace, and common sense for on-the-shelf pharmaceuticals. But online food service delivery companies might have some work to do.
Consumers choose their products based on many factors, including name recognition and price, but packaging appearance may be the most important. According to the Packaging Matters study, aesthetics are “the primary driver impacting a consumer’s decision to try something new, buy something again or switch brands” (as quoted from Packaging Strategies Magazine).
